MLB Team Report - Houston Astros - INSIDE PITCH

Left-hander J.A. Happ kept getting himself into trouble on Thursday night, which is nothing new.

But he also kept getting himself out of trouble, which is a noticeable departure from his recent efforts.

Great escapes in the third, fifth and sixth innings laid the groundwork for a 4-0 victory and two-game series sweep against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Happ allowed one run in six innings, lowering his ERA from 5.72 to 4.96. He set the tone of game with his greatest escape in the third inning, squelching a second-and-third, one-out threat with the Brewers' No. 3-4 hitters coming to the plate.

First, Happ got Ryan Braun to pop to first on a first-pitch changeup. Then, Happ got Aramis Ramirez to ground a curveball to third base.

"No panic," Astros catcher Chris Snyder said. "He just made his pitches."

Happ allowed seven hits but walked only one while striking out seven. He was in lock step with Snyder's game plan to virtually abandon the cutter to work off a lively, four-seam fastball.

"We kind of went back with what got (Happ) here -- a good, true, 4-seamer," Snyder said. "Mainly during the course of an at-bat, he was using the four-seam fastball, a changeup and curveball to put them away. When he's forced to do that, I think it creates more conviction out of him. It showed. He had everything working."

When the Brewers got runners on second and third with one out in the fifth inning, Happ froze Rickie Weeks on a 2-2 fastball for strike three and got Braun to ground out. When the Brewers got runners on first and third with one out in the sixth, Happ got Brooks Conrad on a foul-out to the catcher and Cesar Izturis on a fielder's choice grounder.

"I was trying to attack," Happ said. "I tried to keep it simple as far as getting strike one."

MLB Team Report - Houston Astros - NOTES, QUOTES

--SS Jed Lowrie was 3-for-his-last-23 before a fourth-inning home run off RHP Shaun Marcum that put the Astros ahead for good. Lowrie leads the team with five home runs.

--C Chris Snyder started for the fifth time in 10 games and got two hits that lifted his batting average from .154 to .179. Despite his slow start, he's not fretting. "I feel great behind the plate," said Snyder, who had his 2011 season cut short by back surgery. "That's what I'm here to do. I'm going to catch. I'm going to do whatever I can to help the guy on the mound look good. Every aspect of the game behind the plate, I feel like I've been solid. Hitting for me is icing on the cake."

--2B Jose Altuve went 3-for-5, with two of his hits coming on infield singles, to raise his average to .319. He also stole his eighth base in nine attempts.

--RHP Wilton Lopez turned in his 10th consecutive scoreless outing (10 1/3 innings), lowering his ERA to 1.54. His first walk of the season came on his 79th batter of the season, Aramis Ramirez, in the eighth inning. That's the longest walkless run by a reliever to start a season since John Smoltz went 92 batters before his first lapse in 2004.

--1B Carlos Lee's streak of multiple-hit games ended at four with a 1-for-4 performance. Lee is 11-for-21 in his past five games.

--LHP Fernando Abad, who has allowed four homers in 7 2/3 innings, worked a scoreless ninth inning. He has allowed one run in his past eight outings (six innings) to bring his ERA down to 4.70.

BY THE NUMBERS: 12 -- Number of consecutive games the Brewers had scored four or more runs against the Astros before this two-game series, in which the Astros strung together wins of 8-3 (behind RHP Bud Norris) and 4-0 (behind LHP J.A. Happ).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This weekend coming up is going to be big. It's going to be a time for some young kids in here to put their big-boy pants on and play against a solid team in the American League that a lot of these guys in this clubhouse are going to be going out there and playing a lot in the next couple of years. It's going to be fun to see how everybody reacts." -- C Chris Snyder, on an upcoming three-game series against the Texas Rangers.
